Social Skill Play and Leisure Groups

Goal is to develop meaningful and long-lasting relationships with others

Autism Educational Solutions has found that structured playgroups are a critical component in the development of children with Autism, developmental delays, language delays and social skill weaknesses.

These groups, targeted to address the ages of 2 to 12 years, are a great way for children to learn communication, social, and play or leisure skills. Engaging in play with others develops self confidence and competence for all involved. In addition, it is pleasurable, spontaneous and motivating.

Good social skills are critical to functioning independently in life. These skills enable us to know what to say, how to make good choices, and how to behave in diverse situations. The extent to which children possess good social skills can influence their academic performance, behavior, social and family relationships, and involvement in extracurricular activities.

Individualized playgroups are set up in the natural environment of the home and meet one time per week for 60-90 minutes over a 10 week span. The group is developed for the individual with social skill needs and includes peer models.

Parents are encouraged to form the playgroups, however, Autism Educational Solutions can assist with networking as needed. AES will provide the structure, training, materials and individualized plans for each group. An assessment is completed prior to beginning the playgroups and goals written based on your child’s needs.  Based on the assessment, our team will develop an Individualized Social and Play or Leisure Skill Plan.

The structured social skill playgroups will:

  • Follow a consistent ritual
  • Utilize play/leisure themes of high interest
  • Target individualized goals
